NEC Media Suite Fit Out: A Modern Conference Space Transformed in Birmingham

NEC Media Suite fit out works were completed by Advanced Commercial Interiors to transform an existing space for the NEC Group in Birmingham into a modern, flexible and visually striking conference and media environment.

The project involved a full strip out and refurbishment of the existing suite, including the removal of the flooring, wall cladding, suspended ceiling, tea point, electrical supplies and roller shutter serving the original tea point area. Once the space had been stripped back, ACI delivered a comprehensive fit out package that combined practical upgrades with bespoke design features.

This NEC Media Suite fit out included new flooring, acoustic wall treatments, bespoke joinery, decorative wall panelling, integrated lighting, a new tea point, glazed entrance screens and external balcony planting. A key visual feature of the completed project is the wave-style acoustic ceiling raft system, which adds depth and movement to the space while helping to support the acoustic requirements of a busy conference environment.

The result is a professional media suite that feels contemporary, welcoming and suitable for a wide range of event, presentation and conference uses.

The client required a complete transformation of the existing media suite, creating a more modern and functional space for conferences, presentations and events. The room needed to work hard as a practical event space, but it also had to provide a strong visual impression for delegates, visitors and media teams using the facility.

A major part of the brief was to improve the overall quality, appearance and performance of the space. The existing finishes and services were no longer suitable for the intended use of the suite, so a full refurbishment was required rather than a light-touch refresh.

As the space would be used for media and conference activity, acoustic performance was an important consideration. The interior needed to feel comfortable during presentations and group sessions, while also maintaining a polished, professional appearance.

The brief also extended beyond the main room. As the suite opens out towards a small balcony, the project included external improvements such as faux plants and planters, helping to make the wider area feel more complete and considered.

ACI delivered the NEC Media Suite fit out as a fully coordinated project, managing the removal of the existing elements before installing a new scheme designed around the needs of the space.

The works began with the removal of the existing flooring, wall cladding, suspended ceiling, tea point, electrical supplies and roller shutter. This allowed the suite to be reconfigured and upgraded with new finishes, services and bespoke features throughout.

To support the acoustic requirements of the room, various types of wall cladding were installed across the space. These finishes helped to improve the feel of the environment while also contributing to the overall design. The grey panelled wall system, feature blue wall finish and decorative acoustic treatments were all used to add texture, contrast and visual interest.

One of the standout features of the scheme was the recessed acoustic ceiling raft installation. The wave-style ceiling rafts create a strong design statement, while integrated linear lighting positioned between the rafts gives the room a dynamic and modern appearance. This ceiling design helps turn a practical acoustic requirement into one of the main visual features of the finished suite.

Bespoke joinery was also central to the project. ACI installed curved bench seating, decorative wall panelling with built-in lighting, and a new bespoke tea point with vertical timber detailing. The tea point provides a practical refreshment area for event use, while the seating and planting help create a softer, more comfortable environment around the edges of the space.

A new glazed entrance and screens were installed to create a more professional arrival point and allow views into the completed media suite. External faux plants and planters were also added to improve the balcony area and support the overall finish of the project.

The completed NEC Media Suite fit out has transformed the space into a modern, high-impact conference and media suite with a much stronger sense of identity.

The finished environment balances practical event requirements with carefully considered interior design. The acoustic ceiling rafts, integrated lighting, bespoke joinery, feature wall cladding and new tea point all work together to create a space that feels professional, distinctive and ready for regular use.

The media suite now provides a flexible setting for presentations, conferences, meetings and event activity. Rows of seating can be arranged for formal sessions, while the surrounding bench seating, planting and tea point offer useful breakout and refreshment areas.
